11 Activities for Families this 23-24 April 2016 Weekend

Usually when it comes to compiling to-do lists, I only do so when the public holidays and school holidays are approaching. But strangely enough, there seem to be an overload of family-friendly activities happening in Singapore this coming weekend. Actually, some of the activities start today!

So be it letting the kids experience kampung life, catching a specially-choreographed epic Captain America Light & Fireworks show, heading down to a flea market where NO cash is needed, or enjoying free 2 hours worth of play in Singapore's first indoor water playground, there are plenty to take your pick from this weekend to keep the kiddos truly happy and occupied!

Everyone will be able to immerse in the kampung spirit and culture, while parents will be able to share the carefree kampung days with their kids. Activities include creating art from nature, experiencing the hustle and bustle of the mini bazaar, discovering its 21st century kampung grounds through an interactive Kampung tour, and participating in the customized workshops and activities that are tailored for all ages. The Really Really Free Market is a temporary market based on the concept of giving and building a community based on sharing resources, caring for one another and improving the collective lives of all. No need to bring your wallet along as EVERYTHING IS FREE! Apart from the books, CDs, toys and goods, there will be people cutting hair, doing tarot card reading, singing and writing poetry too. Everyday Folk Market

The Enabling Village, a common space for people with disabilities and the able-bodied, will open its doors for its inaugural market fair this Saturday. Titled the “Everyday Folk Market”, the quarterly market fair focuses on the everyday artist: hobbyists, amateurs, craftsmen and artisans.

Organised by SG Enable and The Local People, close to 50 booths will be set up at the market, offering unique artisanal works including original pieces by artists from the special needs community. Fans of ‘live’ drawing performance can look forward to an art jamming session by local arts collective Band of Doodlers. Foodies will be thrilled by vendors providing a variety of delightful bites.

NParks Concert Series in the Park: Rockestra

NParks is launching its new 'Concert Series in the Park: Rockestra' on 23 April 2016 at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park. Headlined by local musician, Gentle Bones, the concert will feature well-known Singaporean artistes and budding musicians. Mandopop hits by Beyond, Harlem, and S.H.E. will also be performed. Come early to send in your song requests, and join in the many family-friendly fringe activities!

Car-Free Sunday SG

On every last Sunday of the month, the Civic and Central Business District will be transformed into a cycle-friendly, walkable and activity-filled public space with something for everyone as roads around the Padang, together with Fullerton Road, will be fully closed to vehicles. Besides walking, jogging or cycling around the 5km car-free route, the community can look forward to a wide array of family-friendly activities and events.

Kids' Zone, 7.30am – 12pm
Enjoy family-friendly activities where kids can paint and transform a pebble into an ornamental art piece, take part in our ‘Plants & Culture’ plant propagation activity, sketch and colour, or have fun at everybody’s favourite bouncy castles.

Live Out Loud, 9am – 12pm
Enjoy your own 15 minutes of fame at ‘Live Out Loud’ – NParks’ open mike performances – at Esplanade Park. Impress the crowd with your performances, from singing to dancing, or even playing an instrument. To book a performance spot, live-stream your performance with the official title (LiveOutLoud) via ‘Rings – Interactive Broadcast Platform’ through the Rings app or www.rings.tv. Shortlisted performers will be contacted.

Monument Trail (9am – 10.30am / 10.30am – 12pm)
Visit the historical landmarks of the Civic District that tell the story of Singapore’s history, growth and development. Learn more about the heritage and other interesting trees around the vicinity. The Monument Trail starts at Cavenagh Bridge near the mouth of the Singapore River, once the heart of Singapore’s commercial activity and entrepôt trade, and brings you through Empress Place and Esplanade Park before ending at War Memorial Park.

The Affordable Art Fair, the leading showcase for affordable contemporary art, will return from 22 – 24 April 2016 for its third spring edition. Kicking off its seventh year in Singapore, the Affordable Art Fair offers a diverse range of contemporary art all priced between S$100 to S$10,000, with 75% of the art pieces offered under S$7,500.
