This time, it has really come to an end.
Ayd's 20-week journey with heART Studio officially ceased 2 weekends back and on his last lesson, I could see the reluctance and a tinge of sadness in Ayd's eyes as we exited the art classroom for the last time.
I have never seen him being so enthusiastic about any lessons like those at heART Studio. In fact, he seems to morph into a completely different Ayd when it comes to his weekly art lessons! Over the 2 terms, I have seen an improvement in not only his artwork, but also his self-confidence.
Ayd has been attending the Young Van Gogh class since Day 1, which is targeted at kids aged between 7 and 12 years old. The class has been created specially for children who enjoy exploring a variety of materials. So what this means is that their art expression will not be solely confined to the likes of paper or canvas but a mixture of mediums including clay, Paper Mache and acrylic.
What makes art great is the fact that there is no right or wrong when it comes to art. Children, when left to themselves, can churn out the most special artwork with their hearts so it was great to see that Ayd was given the creative free rein to do everything on their own after his teacher had demonstrated the how-to.
And speaking of teachers, Ayd's teacher Gaz is incredibly passionate, lively and most important of all, patient when it comes to breaking down the concepts of brushstrokes and blending of colours into bite-sized information for the children.
One thing that I love about heART Studio is the grouping of the weekly lessons into thematic ones. Throughout the term, various themes will be introduced and each will typically last over a 5-week period. Each theme will allow children to come into contact with a different form of art. And for Ayd's final project, it has all to do with Rangoli, a form of folk art from India in which patterns are created on the floor. I could tell you more, but I think Ayd's notes will be able to do a better job.
And this is why I love the thematic lessons - you can be sure that the kids will love something new every 5 weeks, and it definitely will not be the usual painting-on- canvas work.
For the Rangoli project, the kids were first tasked to a draft design in their art book to get a feel of drawing geometric shapes and patterns in a circular manner.
After 5 weeks, this was what Ayd has to show for his efforts.
Very nice indeed, and I could see that he was immensely proud of it as well.
And maybe, just maybe, he might just be able to continue his lessons after the year-end school holidays. *wink*
