ciNE65: Short, but not miniature

(Daddy blogs)

Good short films are hard to come by because it takes more than just a good structure to tell its story. Ideally, a good short should be able to express its story in one short and crisp sentence... or 3 minutes if you are taking part in the ciNE65 video competition.

Already in its second season, ciNE65 allows film enthusiasts to tell their Singapore story - the good, the bad and the quirky - in a short film no longer than 3 minutes. This year's theme is “I’ll Be There For You, Singapore” and a record 166 film entries were received that saw how Singaporeans from all walks of life interpret the idea of home.

And if I had to pick a personal favourite out of so many entries, this would be it.

Priceless by Kenny Tan

Here is the brief synopsis: A visit to the principal's office over an innocent dispute brings about an invaluable lesson on the significance of defending one's own and being there for what really matters.

Quite simply put, if you only have three minutes to spare today then this is the video to watch. I would not want to reveal any spoilers but let's just say a wave of emotions overwhelmed me when I got to the ending.

I showed this clip to Ash & Ayd too and the moment the credits rolled, they exclaimed that they can understand how the boy felt because that item the boy was defending was very rare indeed!

Well, it turned out that this short film resonated with a whole lot of other people too because at the Awards Ceremony held last night (9 July 2013), Priceless was the big winner, snagging the “Overall Best Film” and “Best Screenplay” awards in the Open Category.

Besides Priceless, other shorts that stood out for me were 忘不了 Unforgettable and Going Away. So if you have another 6 minutes to spare, I suppose these would be well worth your time.

Judging from the sheer quality of short films submitted this year, I guess one thing can be certain - to tell a good story, one doesn't need any big budgets. All you need is a fundamental concept which drives the plot, convey that message concisely and you will touch the audience effortlessly.

Here's to more creative video productions from our very own Singaporeans, as well as unearthing the new Anthony Chens,  Boo Jun Fengs & Royston Tans!
