Last Saturday, we were invited by the Singapore National Co-operative Federation (SNCF) to 'Geek Out at the Library' - a a collaborative effort between National Library Board's 10,000 & more Fathers Reading! programme and My First Skool.
'Geek Out at the Library' encourages parents to be aware of their children's reading development by learning to select and use resources to support and promote early literacy development, as well as inculcate values in their children.
The session was held at the Jurong West Public Library and when we arrived, it was well underway with storytelling sessions and other activities abound.
There were even art & craft stations to keep di-di & me occupied.
The other highlight of the session was the introduction of a storybook - A Very Big Storm - which is part of a series of children’s storybooks that the Singapore National Co-operative Federation has produced for the commemoration of the United Nations International Year of Co-operatives 2012.
The synopsis of the storybook sounds interesting enough: A very big storm is coming! The Squirrel family, Monkey family, Sparrow and Little Honey Bear are all worried. How are they going to stay nice and dry? Explore the forest and meet the cute and kind characters as they rally together to build a shelter and brave the storm in the spirit of "Co-operation".
Penned by international award-winning local author, Emily Lin, the story serves to provide a good learning platform for children aged 3-6 years through the inculcation of positive values like co-operation, sharing gratitude and more.
And thanks to SNCF, we got a complimentary copy of the book! Daddy even got invited up stage to share our cheekiemonkies blog with everyone present. Hee.
